AFTA announces National Arts Index
Today, Americans for the Arts announced its National Arts Index at an event at the National Press Club in Washington DC. The National Arts Index is a highly distilled annual measure of the health and vitality of arts in the United States by using 76 equal weighted, national-level indicators of arts activity. This report covers an 11-year period, from 1998 to 2008. To learn more about the Index or to download the full report, click here. Today, Arts Board Executive Director George Tzougros wrote about the National Arts Index at ArtsBlog, the blog of Americans for the Arts. Twenty-one Wisconsin artists and their non profit partners will receive grants for innovative community arts projects that address areas such as community arts development, arts education, youth oriented projects, access, and cultural heritage/preservation from the Wisconsin Arts Board as a part of its 2010 Artist and Community Collaboration Grant Program. This statewide program provides grants of up to $5,000 in order to encourage more collaborative projects between artists and their communities. [See link above for list of FY 2010 recipients.]

Wisconsin Arts Board Awards
Visual and Media Arts Fellowships

Eight Wisconsin artists will receive fellowships for work in visual and media arts from the Wisconsin Arts Board as a part of its 2010 Individual Artist Fellowship Awards program. This statewide program provides $8,000 awards to outstanding professional artists in recognition of their significant contributions to their field. These funds are intended to be used to create new work, complete work in progress, and/or pursue activities that contribute to their artistic growth. [See link above for list of fiscal year 2010 recipients.]

Wisconsin Arts Board Approves Final FY10 Grants
On December 4, the fifteen-member Wisconsin Arts Board met to award grants through its Artist and Community Collaborations program, its Visual and Media Arts Fellowship program, and its Folk Arts Apprenticeship program. Each of these programs honors artists in different ways. Click the link above to see the list of grant recipients, and to find a fuller description of each program.

During its meeting, the Arts Board also began its long range planning process, which will extend through calendar year 2010 and engage many constituents from across the state.

Enjoy these photos of some artists and staff at the annual tri-state Midwest Folklife Festival. It was a wonderful event that explored the deep cultural roots of our region in aesthetic and interesting presentations. The festival was hosted this year by Illinois (Company of Folk and the Illinois Arts Council). The Iowa Arts Council and the Wisconsin Arts Board were the other partnering state arts agencies. Bishop Hill Heritage Association was the site host. Funding came from the National Endowment for the Arts. Wisconsin was ably represented by rosemaler Lois Mueller (Platteville) and Ghanaian dancer Nani Agbeli (Madison).

The Wisconsin Arts Board met via telephone on Friday, June 12, to discuss and act on the Wisconsin Arts Jobs panel’s recommendation. The members of the Arts Board approved the panel’s recommendation and thanked the panel for its service. A recording of this meeting may be found here. Award and denial letters will be sent to applicants after the Arts Board receives word from the National Endowment for the Arts regarding which Wisconsin arts organizations will receive direct, competitive stimulus funding from the NEA.  This is expected to occur in the next few weeks.

Why is the Arts Board still using its old logo on its own website? (no link)
Thanks to the many of you who have asked this question—great to know that you're paying attention! In fact, we—like many of you—have discovered that putting the new logo up in a well designed way takes more than simply cutting and pasting. The current web page design is structured along the square lines and color scheme of the old logo. Plopping the new logo in is an option, but a poorly designed one. Our web designer on staff is working on it. We look forward to showcasing our new logo soon.

Woodland Ways

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Wisconsin Arts Board initiated direct support to folk artists through the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program which put an emphasis on preserving, in active practice, the traditions of Wisconsin's Native tribes and bands. A detailed, illustrated overview of the program and its accomplishments was prepared in 1994 by Janet C. Gilmore of the University of Wisconsin and Richard March, who implemented the Apprenticeship Program for the Wisconsin Arts Board. Unforeseen obstacles prevented its publication at the time. An updated version of this valuable document now is available on-line.
